Our men in the ground Massimo and his friend Tomssso joined us for dinner last night as a thanks for all the help they have given us in working out the best routes. There was some surprise at how much wine etc is drunk at a n English dinner table, apparently we drink like sponges.
We made our own special way to meet Tomasso in Benevento where he gave us a guided tour of the city, taking in the Trajan arch, the theatre and the view, after a coffee he kindly showed us the way out of town, we might have been there yet if he hadn't.
There was some climbing to be done today and some went to extraordinary lengths to lighten the load for the trip, who needs shoes anyway?
It wa hot too, it got to 29 degrees yesterday and was warmer today and unfortunately, being Sunday, everywhere was shut so by mid afternoon there were 7 very hungry cyclists wilting in the sun looking hungrily at road kill. Then out if the blue at a little town called Monteleone di Puglia the were havin a bit of a do and the barbie was just bing lit, 7 hotdogs and a pile of chips later the crew set off feeling 10 times better.
After a little climb towards the town came the best bit of the day, 19 miles, all downhill much if it on brand new Tarmac, cycling heaven.
Lo and behold we got here just in time for beer o' clock.
As you can imagine there have been great demands placed on the blog causing it to crash last night - yes you guessed it lord Lucan was driving it at the time. Since last year has been on a strict training regime and now resembles Arnold Schwarzenegger (or so he thinks). Check for your self.
Billy whiz (Simon Davies) you will remember - leading the pack into those head winds ( and I don't mean those created by flap jack).
With the wind on our backs this year he has been somewhat redundant with - his time will come.
Woody (John lowery) so called cos he reminds Gari of the bloke off Cheers (he should have gone to spec savers)! Anyway he's had had a quiet start to the tour ........???????
